“Oh my god! This is awful. We can’t bring the girls here. They need to go home now.” The smell of sulfur is strong despite how far away the volcano is.

A hand grips my shoulder and turns me around. The portal shimmers innocently to one side, but behind it, the scenery changes drastically. Gone is the broken, barren wasteland, and in its place is a paved road with a building to one side. The landscape is green and inviting, and there are trees dotted here and there.

“Lucifer thinks it’s funny to have the portal facing Mt. Doom so that when unsuspecting demons or humans arrive, like you and Teddy, you freak out. The rest of us know it’s there, so it’s kind of pointless,” Mason explains.

There is so much for me to unpack with that sentence, I don’t know where to start. Humans can come to Hell? “He called the volcano Mt. Doom?” I mutter incredulously.

“Lucifer has a sense of humor, and you get bored after being in charge for so many years. He changes its name every ten years.”

“I know demons are long-lived, but Lucifer seems even more so.”

“The rumors are it’s because he’s tied to the land. I don’t know, maybe you could ask him when you meet him. Being his niece may give you some leeway.” Mason loses interest in the conversation and moves over to the others.

There seems to be an argument going on, so I also join them, and my mouth drops open in shock. I thought Hell was just another plane similar to Earth, but the talking, three-headed dog who is arguing with Kerry seems to indicate something completely different.

It’s dark maroon, almost black in color, and it doesn’t seem to be covered in fur. Instead, it seems to have a leather-like hide. Ridges dot his back, and his tail is whip thin with a barb on the end. His heads look a little like a Doberman’s but on steroids, and his six lavender eyes shine with intelligence and no small amount of menace.

“Listen, Bussy, can’t you just overlook it this time? We really need to stay off Lucifer’s radar for the time being. I promise I’ll bring you a big buck from Earth next time I come through,” Kerry tells the three-headed dog who has a stubborn set to all three of his muzzles.

“Damn it, we forgot about the gatekeeper,” Mason mutters. “He’s a stickler for rules, and he needs to record all the comings and goings for the official record. Ben is an illegal, and that’s never going to fly. We should have remembered to bring a bribe. He’s always a difficult asshole.”

“Can’t we just tell him that Ben was born on Earth like Teddy and me?” I ask him, and he shakes his head.

“No, because all Earth demon births need to be recorded in Hell, and the parent usually sends a notification.”

“How will he know? He’s just a dog, he can’t read or write. I doubt my mother sent a notification when we were born.
